“Keep your face always to the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you.”
Walt Whitman
Hi there, I’m Deeon and developing a child’s emotional, social and behavioural needs has been paramount to my learning and various roles throughout my life. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and young people; empowering them to thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment.
In addition to being a child therapist, I have a great deal of experience supporting and engaging positively with young people. I’ve worked in pastoral support at a local high school for many years and I’ve fostered children for over 20 years. Through this work I’ve seen the struggles that children and their parents have faced and how this has impacted their mental health and well being. Ultimately this has guided me to help facilitate positive change with the children, young people and their families as a therapist.
I have always been a positive person and look for solutions in any given situation so, when I decided to become a therapist, solution focused hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in particular really appealed to me. This approach encourages children to focus on the positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviour they would like to make, rather than past problems or revisiting trauma. We work to discover their unique strengths and capabilities and how to build upon them in order to thrive.
I work with children from 6 years old to young adults. I have a wealth of experience in working with children who are neurodiverse, have additional needs or disabilities and children who are LGBTQ+.
Areas I can support with include:
- Anxiety
- Social anxiety
- Exam anxiety
- Stress
- Low Mood
- Low self esteem
- Lack of confidence
- Self harm
- Anger Management
- Transitions from Primary school to Secondary school
- Phobias
- Trauma
- Obsessive Compulsive disorders (OCD)
My Approach
It is very important to me that a child feels safe and comfortable when we have our sessions together and they know that I am trustworthy. With this in mind, I offer a free one hour consultation in my lovely therapy room in Eyemouth or online via zoom.
During the consultation I work hard to help you and your child feel comfortable and to show how we can work as a team to find the way forward. We look at what your child would like to change and I take them on an amazing visual explanation of how their brain works to create their problems – in an easy to understand way of course! So many children and parents tell me that this understanding has been a lightbulb moment for them and helped them to support the process and beyond.
My approach is very child centred and I understand how important it is to be trustworthy and consistent. I also have an excellent sense of humour which brings a lightness and positivity to my sessions with children – even if we are tackling tricky challenges.
A little bit about me
I live in the beautiful seaside town of Eyemouth, close to the Scotland / England border. My therapy room is in Eyemouth and it is a lovely calm space for sessions to take place in. I have been happily married for over 20 years and love walking on the beach. This is my very own happy place, having my daily dose of ‘vitamin sea’ keeps me mentally strong. This is further enhanced by my two dogs, Lupin and Tonks. I also have a cat who is very independent! I have a great sense of humour and laugh often.
For your peace of mind I am fully insured, hold an Enhanced DBS and PVG for Scotland and am a member of the following professional associations:
- National Board of Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)
- The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
- The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH)
- Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)
